CRUISE THE PANAMA CANAL IN 2021 ~ Since 1914 the Panama Canal has connected the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It was completed by American engineers. Recently a third, bigger lock was finished to allow larger ships with more cargo to pass through. Ships enter one lock at a time and are lifted up by rising water to move up and over onto a higher lock full of water. That higher lock is then drained of water lowering the ship down into a lower lock at sea level where it is released out to the other ocean. Each ship is literally lifted up and out of one ocean, then lowered down into the other ocean. History of the Panama Canal is captivating to engineers. In fact, the most passengers on any ship going through the Canal are engineers, so report cruise trade magazines. It takes a ship 12 hours to move through the Canal. As Panama keeps raising its tolls to use the Canal, so do mega shipping companies speed up their efforts looking for cheaper, faster ways to move from one ocean to the other. A Northwest Passage way currently being explored by Russia would cut off 5800 miles between Asia and Europe making the Panama Canal less attractive financially. But for now it remains the fastest way for ships to move from ocean to ocean. In Guatemala be prepared to drink the world's best coffee. Why not take some home? You can. In Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas in Mexico enjoy the best time of year with summer still in full swing, but not so hot. In Costa Rica many cruisers spend time looking at real estate since many of them are considering retiring there. Costa Rica is called South America's Switzerland because of its lush, steep, green mountains. Pre and post cruise rates for air flights and hotels will be announced in late 2021.
