DUKE HARRY AND DUCHESS MEGHAN MARKEL OF SUSSEX ~ have the blessing of Great Britain's Queen Elizabeth to live any place in the world they choose away from England with their new baby boy Archie. They've chosen Victoria, B.C., in Canada where the Celebrity Solstice will dock in summer 2021 when Fun & Fitness takes its next cruise to Alaska. Canadian tourist officials say the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who no longer hold Royal titles, are not the first famous couple to visit Victoria and decide to stay because of its British heritage, mild winters and laid-back lifestyle. Another couple did the same in 1904 when Robert Butchart opened a limestone quarry near Victoria. He was the first builder to ever ship limestone powder to make cement in cloth sacks instead of in barrels. He made millions. Prompted by a neighbor who asked her to plant sweet peas, Butchart's wife Jennie insisted to her husband they not leave gigantic holes blown up in the hills surrounding Victoria. After attending Japanese gardening classes together Robert and Jennie began planting flowers to replenish what they'd stripped from the ground. Their highly successful Portland Cement Company allowed them to take voyages around the world in the early 1900s. They would bring back exotic plants and flowers to flourish in Victoria's climate. Their quarry eventually closed, but the popular Butchart Gardens grew to become a National Historic Site in Canada with more than 100 acres of flowers and plants open for public viewing all year round. Butchart Gardens offers an evening tour for this cruise. The Butchart family still today, after more than 117 years, continues to oversee operations at their mega gardens. The driest, warmest time of the year to visit Alaska is in August. Just as it's hot and dry across America in August so will it be warm and dry across Alaska. On this cruise wear casual clothes in layers and bring only an all-weather jacket. No big coats are needed. Whales and moose will be out. Salmon will swim upstream and Husky dogs can even take you on sleigh rides. You could board Celebrity's Solstice in Seattle on Aug. 6, 2021, the day the ship departs. But it's better to arrive at least one day earlier to visit Seattle and adjust to the Pacific time change. A pre-cruise hotel stay near the Space Needle will be offered. In Ketchikan, Alaska learn about totem poles where they have the largest collection of standing totem poles in the world. Seattle's Totem Pole is its Space Needle. Just as Alaskan families tell their heritage by carving out and standing up thick wooden totem poles so did Seattle erect its own totem pole for the 1962 World's Fair. Seattle told the world then it was entering the Space Age never to return. Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Starbucks, UPS, Expedia and Boeing were all born in Seattle too. No city in America has a more highly educated population says the U.S. Census Bureau. In Skagway take the world famous 3 hour White Pass Train ride to climb up Alaska's behemoth mountains into Canada. You will never experience a more beautiful train ride in all North America. Juneau is the Capital of Alaska which became a state in 1959. Juneau must sometimes enforce unpopular state laws like forbidding tourists from giving alcohol to a moose and not waking up a sleeping bear to take its picture. Don't do it! These tickets are costly! Every day on the cruise you can attend water exercise classes held in the ship's heated, indoor Solarium pool. There also will be land based exercises offered too. Classes do not conflict with any shore excursions. Because it's day light 'til 10 PM every day there's ample time to do whatever you choose in Alaska. Exercise classes are taught by your hometown certified water instructors who travel with you. All classes are held aboard ship in private for club members only. Cruises going to Alaska sell out fast for all cruise lines, not just Celebrity. Book yours now knowing you may cancel any time up to Feb. 2, 2021, to receive a full refund. The earlier you book the more mid-ship stateroom and better benefits you have. Finally, if you noticed a silver spoon in Archie's mouth in the top photo the photographers were merely having fun. The custom of depicting children born into wealth by having a silver spoon in their mouth began during the Middle Ages. Peasants who could travel at that time ate only with their hands or with whatever eating utensil they could find on the road, be it a stick or hunting knife. But wealthy travelers had silver spoons they carried in their satchels to use when they arrived to an inn or a castle with food to serve. Because silver spoons never rust they travel well. When you cruise with Fun & Fitness you pick up historic traveling facts too. Welcome Aboard!

WHO TAKES FUN & FITNESS CRUISES? Professionals, retirees, homemakers, men and women alike who want to exercise when they cruise so they can return home revitalized physically as well as mentally. When the club cruised to Alaska in summer 2019 the ship's Captain was so impressed with members' fitness levels and enthusiasm he invited them to join him on the top deck to witness his ship's arrival to Victoria Island. Everyone loved it! This year when Celebrity returns to Victoria, B.C., the Duke and Duchess of Sussex with their son Archie will be living there too.
